What is this crazy problem with my mouse's USB port?:]

Ok... on the right side of my Toshiba laptop is a single USB socket (the other two are on the rear).
Plugged into that socket is the tiny N adapter for a Toshiba-branded wireless mouse (so that the computer isn't resting on the adapter whilst standing in its carry case).

Mostly the mouse functions fine, tho it has one quirk; it powersaves so if left sitting for more than a few minutes, it needs to be clicked once to become active again.

The mouse's problem is intermittent but recurring, mebbe once in half dozen bootups, and I can't logic it out.

Windows loses contact with the mouse, but only during startup. (Ubuntu is also on this machine- so far it has never lost contact.)
If I remove the adapter I get the typical bad-um sound; plug it in again and and it dum-bas up and works for that session and maybe several others.

I've had several flash & hard drives that needed to install themselves, but always found themselves again if in the same socket.

This is something different, but is it software or hardware or what? It puzzles me no end...

Did you use the software provided by Toshiba's mouse? I don't normally load RF mouse software, I let the OS figure it out. But I haven't used a Toshiba mouse, mostly use Logitech and they haven't disappeared or power saved. I use a half dozen RF USB mouses with no problems.

So first place to check is your Control Panel. See if there is a separate item for the Toshiba mouse. If so, check those settings. If not, in Control Panel>Mouse>Hardware>Properties for the generic Windows mouse drivers. See what driver your mouse is using. All mine use the MS mouse USB driver. If you are using a Toshiba mouse driver, maybe the problem.



Second place to check is also the Control Panel>Power Options>Change Plan Settings>Change Advanced Plan Settings. It may be one of those settings, though Windows doesn't normally mess up USB mouse settings.



But I would suspect either a driver problem or a power management problem.

I was focusing on the intermittency, and worrying about my registry or wonky start up sequence.
